Twin toddlers drown after grandmother with Alzheimer’s leaves door open

In a heartbreaking tragedy, twin toddlers — a boy and a girl — lost their lives after wandering out of their Oklahoma City home and into the family’s pool, where they drowned. The children’s great-grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, is believed to have accidentally left a door open, allowing the little ones to slip outside unnoticed.

Jenny Callazzo, the devoted mother of 18-month-old twins Locklyn and Loreli, discovered her babies unconscious in the murky, algae-filled pool. Despite desperate efforts by emergency responders, both toddlers were pronounced dead just hours later.

Callazzo, a stay-at-home mom to six children who also runs a boutique from home, shares the household with her husband and her elderly grandmother. Aerial footage of the property reveals a chilling scene — the pool’s dark green water hinting at weeks of neglect. Neighbors recall the harrowing sight of a distraught Jenny being comforted near an EMS vehicle as paramedics fought to revive her precious children.

Only days before the tragedy, Jenny shared a photo of Locklyn and Loreli playing happily outside, captioned simply: “just want to play outside.” Now, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident but have ruled out any foul play.

The Callazzo family has since created a GoFundMe page to help cover the mounting expenses. Their message is one of grief and gratitude: “These beautiful babies were taken from us too soon. Any support to help with expenses is deeply appreciated. Thank you all for your love and kindness.”

Experts are urging parents everywhere to recognize the silent danger pools pose to young children. Laura Gamino, injury prevention coordinator for trauma at OU Health, explains, “Toddlers are naturally drawn to water but don’t have the skills to save themselves if they fall in. Drowning happens quickly and silently — often without the child being able to cry out because their mouth is underwater.”

She stresses the importance of strict safety measures: “Installing at least a 4-foot-high fence around pools and placing door handles out of children’s reach can save lives. It’s a heartbreaking lesson no family should learn the hard way.”
